56 KB Dial-up PDF Print E-mail

A Dial-up Internet account usually allows the user to access the Internet from anywhere in South Africa by simply making a local call. Dial-up Internet accounts bring cyber space right to the doorstep of many people living in rural areas and/or areas not equipped for ISDN technology and/or areas where the exchanges are not ADSL enabled yet.

A 56 KB Dial-up is the most affordable way of transmitting information such as voice, data, video and images over a telephone line. The downside is that it's also the slowest way of accessing the Web and the Internet.

A Dial-up Internet connection is a service where you need to "dial-up" to access the service. Therefore, even though the service can be used for the transmission of voice, data, image and video over a single medium, it is not a permanent connection - the connection is terminated and/or disconnect by the user when he/she has concluded their Internet related matters for the day.

*An additional fee applies if paying by means of cash deposits - details available on Application Form.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

  • The price for the Dial-up offering is subject to change and is dependent on the pricing structure employed by Telkom / SAIX.

  • A Dial-up line is an access medium to the Internet, while Compu & IT Solutions is an ISP. Thus, Compu & IT Solutions cannot overcome any bandwidth related constraints within the World Wide Web. Dial-up accounts primarily are the slowest type of Internet connection... hence, 56 KB Dial-up line... Still, we do not have control over where the various web servers are hosted and the amount of subscribers accessing the Internet at any one time. Therefore, it's a best effort service and no guarantees are provided on throughput. Please remember that best effort applies once the Internet is reached.

  • Proxy settings are of great benefit when it comes to an even faster connection. When configuring your settings in your web browser, ensure that you make use of the SAIX proxy servers - one of the largest caching servers in Africa - for an improved experience.

  • How difficult will it be to connect to the Internet ?? VERY easy. Our Dial-up connection is always available and it's just one click away.

  • Can I use the existing local lines for Dial-up ?? Yes, a Dial-up access uses the existing local leads of your existing telephone service.

  • What is the difference between the call charges for ADSL, ISDN and Dial-up ?? Since ADSL is an Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), it will provide users with always-available flat-rated Internet access. ISDN, on the other hand, is more than just a means of accessing the Internet; it provides users with a digital network for voice, fax, data and text. ISDN usage is charged according to specific requirements (such as local call rates and a monthly subscription fee etc.), where as ADSL is charged at a fixed monthly tariff for Internet usage. A Dial-up account is also charged according to specific requirement (such as local call rates and a monthly subscription fee). Compu & IT Solutions will be the ones charging you the "monthly subscription fee" part, where as Telkom will be the one charging you for the call itself.

  • Will I be able to use my phone line for anything else ?? No. Unlike an ISDN and/or ADSL lines, your phone line will only be able to handle one service at a time. In other words, you can use your phone line for Dial-up Internet access, faxes and phone calls, but not simultaneously. You'll have to suspend your Internet connection in order to make and/or receive phone calls and faxes.

  • What is the access speed ?? A Dial-up account has the slowest up- and download speed but your genuine, true speed will depend on the speed of your connection, interferences from outside etc. etc. We provide you with a Dial-up account, a username and password. You'll need to have a telephone line and -modem (see the list of requirements).

  • Do you offer Spam Filtering and Virus Protection ?? All incoming messages to our servers are scanned for malicious and unsolicited content.
