There are many things you should take into account when searching for a Web Hosting provider. However, knowing the difference between Shared- and Dedicated IP Addresses as well as Shared- and Dedicated SSL Certificates, is probably one of the most important aspects you need to understand. Some websites can function very well on a Shared IP and therefore, they don't need a Dedicated IP Address. Yet, there are instances where a Dedicated IP is preferred over a Shared IP Address.

What's a Shared IP ?? Every domain name that is home to a certain website has an IP address assigned to it. So, what is this IP address ?? It's the real address of a website or server. But if these IP addresses are the real address of a website and the server who's hosting it, why don't we use them all the time ?? Due to the inherent difficulty associated with remembering long IP numbers like 64.233.167.104, domain names were developed. Thus, we refer to www.google.com instead of 64.233.167.104 In shared web hosting there are literally hundreds of websites sharing one single web server. As mentioned, this basically means that all of the websites assigned to a specific web server will share the same IP address. Apart from reserving IP addresses, this behavior also has some other advantages i.e. it simplifies the technical aspects of hosting your website. Why ?? Because, instead of having a unique IP address for every domain, they can all share one IP address. The fact that they all share the same IP address makes it easier for the technical team to manage and maintain the servers. On the other hand, the actions of others sharing the server can affect your site and cause problems. Why ?? Because if someone sharing your IP address happens to get in trouble for spamming or scamming, your IP can get banned or blacklisted. Moreover, you may not even know it until your site starts to disappear from search engines or until your e-mail start getting blocked by ISPs...... What's a Dedicated IP ?? Most larger websites, especially e-commerce enabled sites, have Dedicated IP addresses. This means that a certain IP address is dedicated to you alone, it belongs to you, no one else. Therefore, your site will be the only one on the internet using that unique IP number. For example, if you typed 209.131.36.158 into your web browsers address bar you would see Yahoo!'s website come up. This is their Dedicated IP address and no one else's. This is their unique address on the web; it is linked to the domain name yahoo.com. A business-oriented website usually needs a Dedicated IP address. This is especially true if you have a merchant account and accept online credit card payments from your clients. You'll definitely need an SSL Certificate for online transactions, and you can't get an SSL Certificate for your website until you have a Dedicated IP address. Of course, you can get around this problem.... You can use a PayPal shopping cart or something else hosted on another site… i.e. off your own site..... But obviously most people don't like the idea of sending their customers to a new address in order to close the deal. For one thing, it looks unprofessional, incompetent and amateurish….. We also need to consider SEO (i.e. search engine optimization). According to some people, sites with a Dedicated IP address perform "mysteriously" better in search engine results than those utilizing shared IPs. But often it's the security concerns more than anything else that drive people to upgrade their hosting account to include a Dedicated IP address. So, what's the basic difference between shared- and dedicated IP addresses ?? Each computer connected to the Internet is assigned a unique IP address, the purpose of which is to communicate with other PCs and servers around the globe. An IP address is a 32-bit numeric address usually expressed as 4 numbers from 0-255 separated by dots, for example 192.168.0.1. There are billions of address possibilities; however, the number is finite. Regarding the web hosting industry, these IP addresses can be divided into two groups : Dedicated IP address (also called static IP) means that a website has its own IP address. Both the URL and the numeric form of the website's address (i.e. its IP address), will bring you to the same domain. The IP address has been reserved for that specific domain and its accompanying URL. Shared IP address means that multiple websites share the same IP address. Since web servers can determine by the domain entered - in a user's web browser - which website is being requested, the different websites hosted on such a single server are actually separated. Typing in the IP address will bring you to some kind of generic page instead of the specific site you want. Thus, the domain name of a website plays an integral role in that it's the decisive factor for determining and retrieving the correct website. Due to the rapid increase concerning the number of registered domain names, and the fact that the number of IP addresses is finite, web host providers are forced to use shared IPs whenever possible. In fact, hundreds of websites often share the same address (without most of their owners even knowing about this). In short : Static IP addresses are no longer the norm and it usually costs more. Who needs a dedicated IP address ?? As a rule, hosting a website on a shared IP address won't result in any problems. However, there are a few cases when a static IP is necessary... Private SSL Certificate – You'll need a Dedicated IP in order to install your own Private SSL Certificate. Secure e-commerce websites need SSL Certificates for performing online transactions and/or for accepting credit cards online. Web hosts usually offer a shared SSL Certificate, which means that clients can share the Web host's SSL. You don't need a static IP if you're making use of your Web hosting provider's shared SSL. Anonymous FTP. This basically means that anyone using the FTP software can access files in a special directory of your site. The user name used to access it, is "anonymous" and therefore, it's called Anonymous FTP. Note that many web host companies require a static IP for the anonymous FTP function to work properly. You want to access your website by FTP or Web browser even when the domain name is inaccessible i.e. during periods of domain name propagation. What are the main advantages of a dedicated IP address ?? A Dedicated IP address for your hosting account enables you to : View your website via its IP address. Access your accounts by FTP or the Web when the domain name is otherwise inaccessible, such as during domain name propagation periods. Ensure faster response during periods of high traffic load. Set up SSL protection on your website. What about dedicated IP hosting and search engines ?? For quite some time now, there has been debate in the SEO industry about whether or not using a Dedicated IP address is better than having a shared IP for your website. Some SEOs believe that there really is no good reason to obtain a static IP address. In terms of web hosting, your site will not perform any better by having its own static IP. Some others theorize that your choice of Dedicated IP hosting vs. shared hosting is a factor considered by search engines and therefore, it might slightly affect your rankings. Yet, others consider the possibility of sharing an IP address with known spam or adult sites raises and consequently feel that this will raise a warning flag with search engines... So, some of them may respond by banning the entire IP address from their index.... In all probability, these fears are greatly exaggerated. The majority of sites on the Web are hosted via shared IP and so, it would be unprofitable to search engines to penalize a site based on its IP address. And besides, search engines are able to ban anything on a domain name instead of an entire IP neighborhood. Therefore, it is search engine safe to use a shared IP hosting. Moreover, almost all web hosting will eventually be shared in order to preserve IP addresses. Is a dedicated IP better than a shared IP address ?? Both shared and Dedicated IPs are useful; what works for you really depends on the kind of website you own. Therefore, you need to do some research and determine which one is right for you. Rumors have it that, under the current system we will eventually run out of unique IPs and a new address or IP system will be necessary. But, even today, most hosting companies charge a premium if you want to upgrade to a Dedicated IP. Dedicated IP hosting may be required if you need to have some sort of special access to your website, like SSL or Anonymous FTP. If you have no special requirements, there's no need to implement Dedicated IP; shared IP will work fine under most conditions. Also, there's no need to worry about your site being hosted on a shared IP address. In most cases, this won't have any affect whatsoever. If you're still in doubt regarding the question of dedicated versus shared IP, consider this : On the one hand there is a very small risk that a clean site could encounter a problem, and on other hand the cost of getting a Dedicated IP is minimal....
