There are many things you should take into account when searching for a Web Hosting provider. However, knowing the difference between Shared- and Dedicated IP Addresses as well as Shared- and Dedicated SSL Certificates, is probably one of the most important aspects you need to understand. Some websites manage perfectly well with a Shared SSL Certificate while some others require a Dedicated SSL Certificate. You'll soon realize that, as far as it concerns security, these two types of certificates are exactly the same. Hence, the implementation of either truly depends on the user and his preferences. | Pricing for Dedicated SSL | |

To get your website up and running using SSL, you'll need the following :
- A Dedicated IP - This is the first pre-requisite for installing a Security Certificate.
- An SSL Certificate - You need this to secure your Domain with https.
- A Domain - You need to have a registered Domain because, after all, it is this Domain of yours that you'll be purchasing the Dedicated SSL (and Dedicated IP) for.
- A Web Host - In order to have a "reachable" Domain on the World Wide Web, you need to have a Web Hosting company that will use their web servers to host your website.

| What is the difference between a Dedicated SSL certificate and a Shared SSL certificate ?? Concerning Shared SSL Certificates, the proxy URL will be required to be located in front of the Domain Name in the address bar of your web browser. For example : http://www.mywebsite.com For "mywebsite.com" to become a secured website, the URL needs to look like this : https://ssl.compu-and-it-solutions.com/mywebsite.com You'll find that the proxy URL now precedes the Domain Name of your website. With a Dedicated SSL Certificate, you don't need to go through the proxy and therefore, you simply need to add https in front of the Domain Name. You need to keep these features and pre-requisites in mind when creating your website. Since the transfer protocol of sites with a Dedicated SSL Certificate needs to be https instead of http, the Domain Name will need to look like this : https://www.mywebsite.com In short : Both Dedicated- and Shared SSL Certificates will secure your website. But, due to the cleaner URL appearance, some people prefer Dedicated SSL over Shared SSL. |
